The dark web is a small part of the internet that normal browsers and search engines can't reach. Its sites use .onion addresses and can only be opened through anonymity networks like Tor. Tor sends your traffic through several volunteer-run relays, so neither the site nor anyone watching can easily tell who you are. Tor began as a US Navy research project in the 1990s.
The dark web isn't the same as the deep web, which is the far larger set of pages behind logins, like your inbox or bank account (which "iceberg" layers are real?). Visiting it is legal in most countries (how to do it safely), and much of it is ordinary forums and privacy tools. It also hosts markets selling drugs, hacking tools and stolen data, and that is where leaked emails and passwords usually end up (see the numbers).
